Facts, Myths and Superstitions
There is no situation in life where free advice is warranted. And, if you’re pregnant, you can be sure of receiving a lot of it. It does have its uses of course. Whenever people share their experiences, there is always something you can learn out of it. After all, wise people learn from others experiences. But, what happens if these are in the guise of misconceptions and myths, strong enough to turn a smug, comfortable life, round and round?
Consult a dietitian for a good pregnancy diet, “For heaven’s sake, don’t believe those who tell you that having extra ghee will make the child slip out smoothly.” You may choke with laughter.
There was, of course, more to come. We read in the papers about a solar eclipse that would come the following week. I was duly warned not to cut anything or touch a sharp object (else the child would be “cut”), and not to venture out of the house (or the harmful rays would burn my innocent baby). frantically searched for information on “ill-effects of eclipses on an unborn baby” On internet there is no evidence of all that well-wishers had so convincingly drilled into
my head. But fear of unknown is the greatest fear.
Some women do not wash their hair in these nine months, they apply sandalwood powder. “You must not deny yourself anything you crave for. It is acceptable with some scientific reason, because “When the child is born it will salivate excessively.”
